The 1988 Branaire Ducru was the first vintage after the late Patrick Marotoux purchased the Saint-Julien property in April. As such, it was matured in 100% new oak as their new winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, now at Mouton-Rothschild of course, did not want to use existing barrels at the property. It is quite youthful in appearance with little ageing on the rim. The bouquet demands encouragement from the glass, eventually revealing pretty red berry fruit, cedar, orange pith and a touch of sage. This is well defined and fresher than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with very satisfying red cherry and strawberry. There is a fine line of acidity, here, certainly fresh and well defined with just a touch of piquancy towards the finish. This is a delightful Saint-Julien at the peak of maturity and clearly one of the better wines that you will find on the Left Bank at 30 years of age. Tasted at the château.

The 1988 Branaire is light, angular, and pleasant, but one-dimensional. Drink this acceptable claret between now and 1998.
