Score 17.5/20 · Drink 1989-2011, Jancis Robinson MW, Jun 2009
Nearing the end of its active life but this is one of the best 1981s I have tasted from anywhere, still vibrant in 2009. Fully developed ruby and only medium bodied but with lovely elegance and harmony. Lighter than the Pomerol norm with some dustiness but no shortage of fruit. (JR)

Score 89/100 · Drink 2003-2013, Robert Parker, Jan 2003
Still dense ruby with some purple nuances, this large-boned Certan de May seems almost atypical for the vintage, which produced such elegant, lighter weight wines. Notes of licorice, dried herbs, red and black fruits, and spice are presently followed by a medium-bodied, relatively vigorous palate with a lot of depth and intensity. Drink it over the next 10 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2013. Last tasted, 5/02.
