The 1950 La Fleur-Pétrus comes from demi-bouteille courtesy of Christian Moueix, who served it blind following our interview for my book. This is a rare item since it predates the acquisition by his father, Jean-Pierre Moueix. It has a lifted, tart bouquet with red cherry, bergamot and iron piping notes. Well defined at first, though it becomes diffuse and slightly volatile with aeration, perhaps due to the smaller format. The palate is medium-bodied with a compelling sense of tension imparted by its racy acidity. Energetic after six decades and piquant toward the finish, if I must quibble then it does cut away abruptly. Nevertheless, the 1950 is a fascinating post-war Pomerol that has survived in smaller format. I suspect larger formats could be a revelation. Tasted blind from an ex-château half-bottle.
