From a drought vintage, the 1968 Shiraz Hill of Grace offers up a glorious mix of aged aromas: camphor, baked red earth, walnuts and cigar box with underlying leafy tones. A juicy fruit core follows, with touches of dried herbs and charcuterie. A fleshy mouthfeel with slightly high-pitched acidity hollows out the finish. Drink up.

Not a great vintage (hot and dry) but the Henschkes’ 100th anniversary year so included for completeness’ sake . Tasting frail now, this still has some echoes of red fruit and a sense of style, but lacks the stuffing of the better vintages, is drying out and tasting a touch medicinal. (MA)

Medium to deep brown colored with a hint of brick, the 1968 Hill of Grace shows off a lovely, lifted nose that is a little like cherry cola - that is to say it has sweet cherry notes with a dollop of vanilla - over hints of dried roses, anise, truffle and dried lavender. Medium to full-bodied with a medium level of acid and a medium level of chewy tannins, the structure deftly supports the tea and truffles flavors before finishing with good length. It is mature now. Centenary vintage. Drought year. Particularly transparent ruby. Very different sort of nose – out of the family? Some sort of strange herb/cough sweet ingredient – camphor? Lightly cheesy. Salty and very dry on the end. Out of balance. Hot finish. (JR)
