Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The 2011 Meursault 1er Cru Porusots from Comtes-Lafon has improved since I last tasted it. It displays fine precision on the nose with touches of chalk, grilled walnuts, orange rind and citrus peel. It is intense, but very well controlled. The palate is fresh and vibrant with very well-judged acidity, lovely orange zest and subtle tropical fruit notes, with plenty of swagger and verve on the long finish. This is the most harmonious and convincing wine of this flight.

(three-quarters from 50-year-old vines, the rest from 15-year-old vines; 30% new oak; this cuvee is imported by Grand Cru Selections in New York City): Peach and orange oil on the nose, along with a light peppery quality. Ripe, concentrated and glyceral but with good acidity framing the soft citrus and spice flavors. Firmly structured wine but today its oak element clashes with its acidity, leaving the wine dry and imploded--even a bit tannic. This needs a good five years in the cellar.

He has 1 ha. Rich and creamy and still dense but with a polish and savoury finish. All on the end. LOTS of chew. (JR)

(picked fairly late, like the Goutte d'Or): Musky aromas of citrus fruit, white truffle and spicy oak. Concentrated, fresh and sappy, with some CO2 adding punch to the mid-palate. Most impressive today on the long, rising, subtle finish, which shows more breadth than the Goutte d'Or. Lovely balance and plenty of personality here.
