Sensational freshness and vitality to the nose here, which frames barely ripe nectarines, bright lemons, guava peel and green paprika. The compact phenolics on the full body are such that the pointed acidity doesn’t hit you at first, but the sharpness is undeniable on the long, mineral finish. Drink now or hold.

You can sit on the fence or you can pick a winner. Winemaker Dominic Völk is the kind of genius who manages to extract the full potential of all the estate’s sites, but the Pergentsknopp just gets nose and palate ahead with a magnificent fragrance of warm hay, fennel, aniseed and generous yellow fruit, and that’s before you get to the salty essence of minerality that makes the taste buds tremble. Taut, compact, dynamic. (MS)
