Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Ripe, dark and pretty oaky on the nose. Firm, thick, chewy, not much fruit impression on the palate and it’s all hiding at the moment. (JH)

The 2020 Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is crisp and focused on the nose, with blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, crushed stone and a touch of violet. The palate is fresh, vibrant, black-fruited and quite spicy compared to others, delivering more weight and persistence on the finish to the extent that this deserves another year or two in bottle. I always love the second wines from these great estates. The 2020 Pavillon De Léoville Poyferré is up-front, loaded with fruit, and as delicious as they come, offering lots of darker fruit, some spicy wood and graphite notes, medium to full body, and ripe, elegant tannins. Drink this balanced, impeccably made Saint-Julien over the coming 10-15 years.

Ch. Léoville-Poyferré is a Second Growth Saint-Julien property that was once part of the same estate as Ch. Léoville Barton and Ch. Léoville Las Cases. It has the most complex and varied soils of the three and produces the most voluptuous, seductive style of wine.
