Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers from Domaine Serafin has a very attractive bouquet with pure dark cherry, strawberry and sous-bois scents that are lifted by the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth with well-judged acidity, quite refined and classy albeit understated. There is just a dab of spice on the aftertaste that lends it persistence, completing what is a very attractive Gevrey despite what might be a slightly over-zealous use of oak that just occludes the finish at the moment. Therefore I would afford this several years in bottle.

Full healthy red. Cool floral lift to the aromas of black cherry, menthol and grilled oak. Sweet, intense and nicely delineated but a bit youthfully clenched, with the black cherry, mineral and menthol flavors lifted by spices and violet. Less marked by the oak today than the Charmes, this is a Cazetiers with outstanding energy and juicy grip.

Good bright, deep red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, minerals, mint and menthol. Densely packed, fresh and energetic, showing a strong spice character to its black cherry and mineral flavors. Has the thickness of texture to carry its tannins. Finishes spicy and long, with a lingering note of chocolatey oak. From a crop level of 38 hectoliters per hectare: Serafin made four barrels, compared to a normal five.

Christian Serafin's 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers is going to require considerable time to soften. Iron, smoke, black cherries, autumn leaves and earthiness are some of the many notes that inform the Cazetiers. The 2012 boasts superb depth and pure power. At the same time, it is remarkably polished. A compelling melange of floral, spice and mineral notes wraps around the finish.
