Clearly the standout of the 2021s from Ferraton and one of the few medium to full-bodied wines in the vintage, the 2021 Ermitage Le Méal (100% Syrah raised in 35% new oak) reveals a healthy purple hue as well as a ripe, beautifully balanced style with notes of both red and black fruits, some spicy, floral nuances, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The 2021 vintage doesn't get any more textured and opulent, and this beauty will evolve nicely for 15 years if well stored.

The 2021 Ermitage Le Méal is fairly reductive at this early stage. A few minutes of aeration unlock restrained blackcurrant, black cherry, cured meat, cedar and earthy shadings. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol, its distinctive tannic structure seems a bit too powerful for the delicate fruit. Time might be the cure here, but I’m going to put my money on the 2022.
