Tasting notes
Made with 100% Merlot, the Barone Ricasoli 2020 Casalferro has a warm and generous personality that accurately reflects both the character of the grape and the warm vintage. This soft and velvety red wine is packed tight with ripe fruit aromas of black cherry, baked plum, spice and something a little exotic that reminds me of the chocolate made in Modica, Sicily. Past vintages have shown a floral character, but 2020 delivers a lot of upfront berry fruit instead. Fruit is sourced from three sites: Vigna Sodacci, with sandstone soil; Vigna Pecchierino, with alberese soil; and Vigna Casalferro, with a mix of sandstone and alberese. Production is 12,000 bottles.

The 2020 Casalferro, 100% Merlot, is fabulous. Dark blue/purplish fruit, gravel, leather, licorice and crème de cassis make a strong opening impression. Bright acids and veins of supporting structure are a reminder we are in Chianti Classico. All the elements are so well-balanced. What a gorgeous wine this is.
The aromas are enticing, with violets, orange peel and hints of sandalwood. Some clove and white pepper undertones. Medium-bodied with a crunchy and polished tannin structure that’s juicy and savory. Merlot. Slightly chewy, suggesting it needs time to come around. Best after two or three years.
