The 2017 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert has layered aromas of blackberries, cranberries, mushrooms, oolong tea leaves and Angostura bitters. The medium-bodied palate is soft, rounded and pleasantly rustic, its wild berry flavors streaked with notions of earth and woodsmoke. It’s the most evolved of the Royal St. Roberts Pinot Noirs in this flight and will be best over the next five years.

Aromas of rose petals, rose stems, orange peel, thistle leaf, tea and dried strawberry. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a creamy texture. Fresh mushrooms and moss. Complex. Gorgeous now.

Pale crimson. Pure, unadorned fruit with a cheeky little undertow of California sunshine. Fine and polished. Sleek and appetising, Quite long – in fact it opens out on the finish. Not Burgundy, but so what? (JR)

Here's what Raen have to say about their top bottling: 'Our Royal St. Robert Cuvée is named in honor of our grandfather Robert who taught us to be committed to excellence. This bottling is a selection of our finest barrels giving a window into the cool, rugged westerly hills of the true Sonoma Coast.' Whole-cluster, wild fermentation, aged in neutral French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. Bright garnet. Very pure and complex nose with savoury notes. Finely knit ingredients that are still youthful. The most complex of the three Raen 2017 Pinots reviewed. Really pretty snazzy. Do they discard lots of fruit to achieve these flavours? Not skinny. Rewarding. (JR)
