Score 94/100 · David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Feb 2006

The lone 2004 Winninger Rottgen Riesling Auslese represents 200 liters harvested in frosty December 14 conditions and destined for auction. Piquant lime zest, anise, sea breeze, and chalk dust aromas don’t prepare one for the explosion of lime, pink grapefruit, white peach, and strawberry on the palate. Freshness of fruit, airiness and clarity, as well as persistent salinity make this a truly invigorating experience, yet at the same time the textures are oily and creamy. The finish perpetuates the honeyed, intense impression of super-ripe and subtly botrytised fruit along with the clarity and invigorating yet, in this instance, not at all sharp acidity of Eiswein.
