85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Richly fragrant, floral nose leading to fully developed blackberry fruit with an edge of pencil lead and dark chocolate. Then on the palate, there is medium body and good tannic structure. Very mouth-watering, and very modern. (RH)

The 2017 La Grave is powerful and dense in the glass. Dark blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs give the 2017 a decidedly somber intensity that comes through in the wine's overall feel as well. The tannins remain firm and sinewy, while slightly gamy, animal undertones reinforce an impression of rusticity. The 2017 is best enjoyed at the dinner table alongside rich, hearty fare.

Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine is medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 la Grave is a little closed to begin, unfurling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, iron ore and wild mushrooms over a core of blackberry pie, wild blueberries and mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mineral-tinged black fruits and a firm, chewy frame, finishing earthy.

The 2017 La Grave has a pleasing bouquet with cassis and pressed flowers (iris and violet) on the nose, perhaps higher-toned than expected given the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, an easy-going and unapologetically approachable Pomerol with a satisfying saline finish. Enjoy over the next 12 to 15 years.
