Tasting notes
The 2018 Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois is another of the highlights of this year's collection, exhibiting aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, earthy forest floor and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly chalky and nicely concentrated, with fine depth at the core and a sapid, penetrating finish.

The 2018 Blagny la Piece Sous Le Bois 1er Cru comes from 0.75 hectares of vine in the lower reaches of the vineyard. This was picked on September 3. It offers brambly red and black fruit on the nose, mixed with potpourri scents; there is good vigor here. The structured palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, good grip and a pretty, spicy, white-pepper-tinged finish that oddly reminds me of a fine Côte-Rôtie! Very, very delicious.
No whole bunch needed, it already has its seasoning, says Leroux. His own vineyards, 0.8 ha (2 acres). 15% of the red appellation. Blagny is not like any other appellation, he believes, it’s ‘un village à part’. It has only 4 ha (<10 acres) of red vines (used to have much more) and it is undervalued. Barrel sample. Dark fruited, rocky and mineral. Not quite as finely textured as the village Volnay, not quite as long. Dark fruit, perfectly ripe. Elegant, silky and cool – a perfect vintage for Blagny because it is a cooler site. Not as persistent as the Volnay but lovely harmony. (JH)
