While the 2022 and 2021 vintages are showing more primary nature at this tasting, the 2020 and 2019 vintages are starting to come together and express more savory character. Also pouring a medium red color, the 2020 Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese exhibits a touch of pliant notes, with hints of baked red cherry pie, pretty floral notes, and fresh flowers, complemented by subtle notes of walnut. Savory on the palate, it’s medium-bodied, with ripe tannins, salted orange peel, pithy citrus, and ripe tannins with some grip. Drink 2025-2037. Albarelli Di Giodo is the sister estate to Giodo in Montalcino and is managed by Carlo Ferrini and his daughter Bianca. I was able to taste three cuvées from this new estate

Current vintage. Transparent ruby. Rich yet nervy with lots of pace. And some light animal notes. (JR)

Carlo Ferrini's 2020 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese opens to a beautiful ruby hue and an elegantly lean appearance. The wine delivers tart cherry fruit, cassis, blue flower, iron ore and orange peel. These various layers come together with balanced intensity. This vintage shows enormous elegance and tannins that melt onto the palate slowly and with lasting flavors. This bottle offers a very genuine and classic expression from the Sicilian volcano.

Love this wine, packed with soured cherry, freshly cut herbs, sage spices, gunsmoke reduction and overall just mouthwateringly moreish. Barely-there jewel-ruby in colour, yet the concentration on the palate is striking, performing the brilliant trick that only certain grape varieties can manage. Located on Etna, but bottles under Sicilia Rosso (the same family has an estate over in Montalcino but bottles under Tuscany, clearly likes to have as few rules as possible...). Third vintage on the Place, with a tiny production. A value pick.
