The 2008 Magrez Fombrauge is a beauty and comes from a tiny parcel of old vines and is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 22 months in oak. It offers a deep, black-fruited profile as well as complex notes of smoked herbs, chocolate, truffle, and earth. It’s a powerful, full-bodied effort, yet has the more firm, concentrated, dense style of the vintage front and center. With ripe tannins and impressive fruit, it’s at the early stages of its drink plateau, where it should stay for another 10-15 years.

Tasted blind. Blackish ruby. Rather tired nose. Very big and ripe and almost over the top on the palate. I’d like a bit more freshness and energy myself but this could satisfy those looking for an obvious hit of mass. Painful acidity on the end. (JR)

Quite focused Cabernet-like aromas. Very sweet start – purple berries. Drying tannins on the end. Very cool and a little lacking richness on the end. (JR)
