Tasting notes
The 2021 Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay is on the table today because I happened to drink a bottle recently and noted that it looked exceptional—far more exciting and complete than when I reviewed the wine on release. It confirmed the long held assumption—yet again—that Margaret River Chardonnay is infinitely more exciting several years from harvest. My general rule of thumb is five years from picking and beyond. So, here we have a four-year window of fruit evolution, and it shows a tightly coiled register of acid and phenolics inextricably linked to one another. The fruit spools out over the orchard fruit, citrus and brine spectrum and finishes with a nutty flourish. With time in a decanter, and even more time in the cellar, this wine promises to be an intensely exciting drink in years to come. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The tense, linear 2021 Chardonnay Burnside Vineyard is a young stallion that is brimming with youthful vitality and needs time to unfurl. Aromas are concentrated and precise - citrus and florals with a distinct pithy edge beautifully intertwined with vanilla oatmeal barrel characters. Beautifully composed, it is just starting to reveal its charms with a firm backbone of acidity driving through to a seriously long finish. Put this away to enjoy at its best.
