Another brilliant wine from this estate, the 2023 Château Petit-Village offers ripe black cherries, crushed stone, chocolate, and subtle leafy herbs as well as sappy floral nuances. Based on 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and aged 16-18 months in 45% new French oak (the balance in one-year-old barrels, 20% in 500-liter), it’s a dark, rich, concentrated Pomerol with a medium-bodied, beautifully textured mouthfeel, terrific tannins, and outstanding length. It has the class to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades. Drink 2029-2045.

The 2023 Petit-Village is one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting here. Light on its feet and translucent, the 2023 possesses gorgeous mid-palate depth and fine balance to match. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint, spice and blood orange build nicely in the glass. Hopefully the 2023 is a sign of things to come for this Pomerol estate.

65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 36 hl/ha. Certified organic. Cask sample. Floral and dark-fruit notes with plenty of lift. Fruit juicy and crunchy. Palate structured and precise, the Cabernet element manifest. Line and length and nothing over the top. Can feel the progress being made under new ownership. (JL)
