The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino reminds me more of savory cuisine than wine on the nose, with an exotic and uniquely pleasurable bouquet of acacia, hazelnut, dried berries, spiced orange rinds and mint. It displays the softest textures imaginable, with a note of cherry herbal tea and salty minerals that create a balanced contrast on the palate. Cool-toned, fresh and unlike any Brunello I've ever tasted, the 2014 leaves me guessing. Where will this go? What will it become? In the end, it's an incredibly pleasurable experience.

Aged for 36 months in botte. From the west of the zone. Pale ruby. Heady, pungent, vegy nose. Definitely autumnal. Complete. Not heavy, really quite elegant. The opposite of concentrated and fruity. Quite sophisticated. Very clean, refreshing finish. (JR)

The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino shows darker and richer than you’d expect, as ginger-spiced cookie, a dusting of confectioner’s spice, plums and hints of smoke evolve in the glass. Its textures are soft, even a bit fleshy, with a mix of hazelnut and sour cherry. A staining of herbal-tinged fruits and tea lingers long, as this tapers off with a buzz of residual acids and only lightly structured. Only 9,000 bottles of Brunello were produced in the difficult 2014 vintage; the other 22,000 went into the Rosso di Montalcino.

Mid ruby with bricky rim. Lifted, complex yet gentle nose. Elegant, mid-weight palate of ripe cherry fruit and a layer of soft tannins. Long and intense. (WS)
