Tasting notes
The 2020 Vino Fino de Guarda Reserva is from the oldest vines in Aguilera, a field blend of 85% Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha, Bobal, and Albillo that are co-fermented, like many of the producer’s wines. It sees long aging in French oak only, nearly three years in all, including a good chunk of time waiting for malolactic fermentation to finish. It’s complex yet youthful, with a freshness that wraps around medium-bodied richness and structure. The fruit is crisp and seductive in dark cherry, plum, and baking spice, with a persistence of violet. This is one to age, with an ideal drinking window of 2030-2040.

The nose of the 2020 Reserva is beautiful, perfumed and floral, showy and expressive, really open. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine-boned and very fine and chalky tannins. It has 14% alcohol, not a shy red, with power and concentration, freshness and terrific balance. It has a long finish with a touch of licorice and violets. It has to be among the best vintages for Reserva. 2020 was a very good year for Dominio del Águila. It matured in French oak barrels for 33 months. 38,221 bottles and 868 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2023. It is young but approachable and should age beautifully.
The 2020 Dominio del Águila Reserva is 95% Tempranillo with other local varieties from La Aguilera, Ribera del Duero. It offers intense aromas of soft oak, ripe black fruit, balsamic hint, plum and blackberry. The palate is juicy, with medium tension and flowing, fine-grained tannins. There is a touch of violet and a mature fruit profile. Expressive and juicy. Compared to the 2019, it is slightly riper and more full-bodied.
