Tasting notes
The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has an effervescent bouquet: vivacious Morello cherries, crushed strawberry and blood orange scents, surfeit with energy, quite captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with a veneer of oak to be subsumed. This is grippy, and there's an arching structure to this Premier Cru, with well-judged acidity with substance and grandeur on the finish. This is another impressive Premier Cru from the upper reaches of Vosne-Romanée. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

0.13 ha, the soil here is very similar in character to Reignots – meagre and just 20 cm in depth over fissured limestone. Vine age 50 years, 600 bottles. Cask sample. Fine, delineated, elegant yet with the concentration to flesh out with a few more years' maturation. Quite restrained – almost Chambolle-like in its floral character and restraint – but there is an iron fist and power underneath the velvet. Very classy premier cru. (AWH)
