Tasting notes
Always a beautiful, classic Pauillac, the deep purple-hued 2023 Château Fonbadet does exceptionally well in the vintage. Based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot and aged 14-18 months in 100% new barrels, it offers darker currants, leafy tobacco, espresso, and gravelly earth as well as classic lead pencil nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, building tannins and outstanding length. It's going to cruise for 20-25 years in a cold cellar. Drink 2029-2051.

The 2023 Fonbadet is a very sexy wine. Soft, racy contours wrap around a core of dark fruit. New leather, licorice, incense, gravel and dried herbs all build in the glass. The 2023 is done in an especially sumptuous, fruit-driven style. Readers should expect a big, bold Pauillac. This is the last vintage before most of the vineyards were sold to one of the top estates in the appellation.
The 2023 Fonbadet has a delightful, lively bouquet with exuberant black fruit, fine mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity, sapid black fruit with a dash of black pepper toward the finish. This will represent one of the best values from the appellation.
