Inky ruby. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit scents are complicated by notes of woodsmoke, olive and Indian spices. Sappy, penetrating and focused on the palate, offering intense cassis and bitter cherry flavors with a hint of spicecake. Zesty mineral and white pepper nuances energize the finish, which clings with outstanding tenacity and just a whisper of dusty tannins.

Bottled in February of this year, the 2011 Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospices is one sexy, seamless and silky Syrah that readers shouldn’t miss. Perfumed and complex, with a sweet bouquet of cassis, licorice, spice-box and pepper, it has a medium to full-bodied, forward style that’s perfect for drinking over the coming decade or more.

Pure granite – same as Bessards. Opposite Chapelle. Almost black. Zesty and not that dense but very attractive in a tobacco-lead way. Glossy fail-safe. (JR)
