Score 89/100 · Drink 2018-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, May 2024

This is the first vintage that the wine becomes an IGT Toscana. The Fattoria le Pupille 2014 Poggio Valente is open and immediate today with more evolved aromas overall, especially when served next to the 2013 vintage in this retrospective. The tannins are silky and fine, and the wine shows an ethereal and elegant side. But the bright punch of the fruit has faded.

The 2014 Poggio Valente offers good Sangiovese character, with plenty of dark red varietal fruit. There is lovely depth and persistence, especially within the context of the year. This is very nicely done. Hints of cedar, anise and tobacco add shades of nuance. The move towards larger 500-600 liter oak has added finesse to the Poggio Valente, although the tricky 2014 vintage is not the easiest year to fully see that.
