The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has another quite high-toned and opulent nose like Domaine Georges Noellat's, but here there is more red fruit and Pinoté evident. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, fine structure with quite a minerally, chalky-texture, sapid finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Just a little lactic and chocolaty on the finish - perhaps from the oak. That will be addressed with time in bottle. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Matured in 40% new oak and with 20% stems, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with very good backbone. A little stocky for a Petits-Monts but shows impressive sapidity toward the long finish. Patience is needed here.

A special parcel for them, explains Amélie Berthaut, just 50 ares (1.2 acres), above Richebourg. Planted before her grandparents (with some young vines). Too steep for a tractor so it has to be ploughed using a horse (they used to do it by hand). Planted across the slope. Everything done by hand. ‘A lovely place to work with the view and the peace.’ 20% whole bunch. Barrel sample. Rich, dark fruited and lightly peppery. Lovely depth of sweet black fruit, and the tannins are incredibly smooth already though compact and well built. Depth of dark fruit but delicacy of tannin, and just lovely freshness from 2018. (JH)
