Score 93/100 · Drink 2029-2044, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2026

The 2023 Château La Confession is based on 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec and aged in 60% new French oak with 20% in amphora and the balance in once-used barrels and demi-muids. Pure red and blue fruits, crunchy black cherries, graphite, and smoked herbs intermixed with tobacco all emerge from this medium-bodied, nicely concentrated 2023. It has ripe, polished tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a pure, slightly crunchy style that's going to age beautifully. Give bottles 2-3 years if you can and enjoy over the following 15 years. Drink 2029-2044.

The 2023 La Confession is a bold, powerful Saint-Émilion. Blue-toned fruit, menthol, licorice, spice and tobacco are all dialed up. There's quite a bit of Cabernet Franc in the blend, plus a touch of Malbec, both of which make themselves felt as the wine opens in the glass.

Fruity and refreshing but precise, with aromas of red cherries, currants, fine spices and hints of wasabi, minerals and tobacco. Vibrant and refined, with a medium body, bright acidity and crunchy, fine-grained tannins. Al dente and expressive, with a long, linear finish. Drink now or hold.

Spicy red and black plums, tobacco, spring flowers, and smoky oak all emerge from the 2023 Château La Confession, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, classic, old school-styled Saint-Emilion that has ripe, foursquare tannins and a good finish. It's clearly well-made and I suspect will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age. The blend is 70% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec, aging in 50% new oak, with 20% in amphora.
