The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes 1er Cru currently labors under a lot of reduction on the nose, although this should blow off with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, pastille-like notes with hints of cassis and blueberry, leading to a succulent, slightly saccharine finish that fortunately is not too sweet. Flattering and thoroughly delicious. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

(20% vendange entier ; the yield here was infinitesimal due to the frost): Bright ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, licorice, menthol and dark chocolate. Tactile but taut, with brisk acidity and a surprisingly polished texture for Nuits-Saint-Georges. Aeration brought a bit more flesh but this is a distinctly drier--and less floral--style than most of the estate's Vosne-Romanée wines in 2016. Finishes with an element of medicinal reserve and a serious spine of tongue-dusting tannins. Classic Nuits-Saint-Georges in style.

There are just four-and-a-half barrels of the 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes and so Louis-Michel will probably keep this cuvée private for his coq au vin. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet with more red fruit that the Aux Cras (for example). This is quite open, playful even. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannin, tensile red berry fruit, quite spicy at first but sleek and caressing toward the finish. Very fine.
