The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes 1er Cru has a superior bouquet to others from Prémeaux this season. Perfumed black cherries and cassis scents, quite focused and nicely defined. There is freshness in situ. The palate is clean and fresh with dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. There remains a patina of new oak to be subsumed but everything feels nicely proportioned here. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grands Vignes Rouge 1er Cru has a well-defined, intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit infused with melted tar, undergrowth and light minty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening, plenty of fresh red berry fruit laced with blood orange and a very lively, vivacious finish that belies the three times this vineyard was hailed upon. Superb.

Like the Nuits Cras that preceded it, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes Rouge is also a muscular, powerful wine this year, unwinding to reveal aromas of cassis, plums, rich soil tones and peonies that are framed by a deft touch of spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and youthfully structured, with lively acids and a creamy, vanillin-inflected finish. This will reward some bottle age.
