The 2010 Barolo Bricco Pernice makes for a luxurious start to the evening’s proceedings. Just as striking in its aromatics and precise as it has always been, the 2010 is utterly magnificent. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted in a Barolo that captures the pure pedigree of this great vintage.

The 2010 Barolo Bricco Pernice is a fabulous and exuberant expression with dark lines and the proverbial big bones. You get structure, power and long aging potential wrap into one beautiful package. Fruit is sourced from a two-hectare vineyard that represent one of this estate's most historic and celebrated crus. The intensity and vigor of the wine is impeccable and it finishes with well-managed tannins and long flavors of dark fruit, Morello cherry and spice. This wine needs to flesh out further. Give it another 5-10 years of cellar aging.

Intense, soaring aromatics, nuanced fruit and silky tannins are some of the signatures in Cogno's 2010 Barolo Bricco Pernice. Hard candy, lavender, plums and cassis meld into more exotic white pepper and orange rind overtones. Translucent and regal in the glass, the 2010 is all about finesse. At the same time, there is plenty of acidity and tannin lurking in the background, both of which ensure the 2010 will drink beautifully for years to come. The Bricco Pernice emerges from a parcel that separates Cogno's holdings with those of Vietti.

From 50-year-old vines on 350m. 100% Lampia clone. Healthy ruby with narrow orange rim. Quite closed and savoury and a little dusty at first. Finely perfumed but not at all sweet. With aeration, hints of spice and layer upon layer of fragrant ‘mineral’ fruit. Beautiful cool strawberry and cherry on the palate with tightly woven tannins and energetic acidity. Wonderful playful lightness on the palate and a muscular finish. Very, very young, long and linear. (WS)
