Tasting notes
This vintage starts off with a bigger sense of fruit weight and texture. The Tenuta San Leonardo 2019 San Leonardo is a little more accessible in the medium term (for a wine that notoriously requires many years of cellaring to show its best results). Fruit flavors embrace blackcurrant, spice and cured tobacco. There is a hit of black pepper in this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot, but otherwise you get more ripeness in this medium- to full-bodied vintage.

Full bottle 1,409 g. Total production 65,400 bottles. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère, 10% Merlot aged for 24 months in Fench oak barrels of various ages. Transparent garnet colour. High-toned, with balsam and some black-pepper notes. Extremely graceful – non insistent. Already easy to like but it will surely develop more complexity over time. Very much a wine for the table and for food that is not too emphatic. An unusually delicate wine that builds towards the peacock's tail finish. (JR)
The 2019 San Leonardo is impossible to ignore, embodying everything I love about this distinctly northern Italian Bordeaux blend. Masses of white pepper, sage, incense, sandy earth and fresh tobacco give way to dusty red currants. This is a model of elegance yet salty and savory to the core, with mineral-laden red and black fruits that flow across silky textures. The 2019 finishes classically dry with a crunchy tannic bite yet maintains an impossible freshness as savory herbal tones slowly fade. This is stunning, recalling the absolute top vintages I’ve ever tasted from San Leonardo.
