Score 93/100 · Drink 2024-2044, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, Jun 2024

This terroir, situated near the estate, comprises sand, clay and chalky soils. Evoking a deep, complex bouquet of wild dark berries, violet, menthol, spices, licorice and loamy soils, the 2020 Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos is medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered with powdery tannins, a fleshy core of fruit and a long, ethereal and mouthwatering palate, beautifully framed by calcareous acidity. This excellent rendition of Cabernet Franc shows great promise. It is expected to mature nicely over the next couple of years and will continue to drink well throughout the decade.

The fruit for the 2020 Les Varennes du Grand Clos comes from a site where the top of the slope is mainly clay and limestone while the bottom tends to be sandier. The result is a focused style with attractive, precise aromatics—think violet and both black and red cherry. Cool fermentation temperatures preserve and highlight its aromatic lift. Racy, fresh and bright, tannins provide structural framework, giving this wine drive and frame.

Les Varennes du Grand Clos is a north-east facing slope and is the little sister of Clos de la Dioterie. The top of the slope is mainly clay and limestone while the bottom tends to be sandier. There's plenty of richness within the light bodied frame of the 2020. The tannins are resolved and stone-licking-good with ripe fruit cake-like flavors and a fine chalky texture that draws out on the finish. Tank sample.
