Tasting Notes
This is the second release of Baettig's "village" Cabernet Sauvignon, Los Compadres, which also gets a new label from the 2023 vintage. The fruit comes from a selection of parcels in the Maule, averaging an impressive 50 years in age. Pure Cabernet Sauvignon, it spent 10 months in 10% new French oak. It's a lovely follow-up to the 2022, floral and elegant with firm tannins that offer a pleasing bitterness. These are complemented by a silky mid-palate and a wave of vibrant cassis fruit that fills the finish.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Vino de Vinedo Los Compadres was aged for 10 months, 10% in new oak Garnet with a purple hur, it opens with blackberry and cassis in a ripe and warm profile. This has a balsamic touch and leafy note that adds complexity. Dry, with good volume and firmly structured tannins, it shows concentration, expressive fruit and juiciness. The tannins are well suited to this robust style.
Pancho Baettig made his name with Cabernet Sauvignons from the Maipo and Aconcagua Valleys, but sources this one from different vineyards in the Maule Valley. Meaty, spicy and intense, with notes of dried herbs, it has a firm tannic handshake, lots of colour, prominent acidity and damson and blackcurrant fruit.
A lovely nose of beautiful ripe cassis and complex tobacco leaves, tobacco ash and roasted red peppers. Quite tannic, with lots of good acidity that invites you to refill your glass. A tight, austere grip at the end, but it’s not drying. It spent 10 months in oak barrels, of which 10% were new. Drink from 2026.
