Tasting notes
The Chiappini 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de' Gemoli has an exotic tone of teak or patchouli oil that dovetails into richly concentrated fruit and baked plum. This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc feels very extracted and rich thanks to its tannic structure and lingering flavors of grilled herb, cola and sweet baking spice. Richness and concentration are what set this hot vintage apart. Given the slight dryness on the palate, I suggest a medium-term drinking window. It ages in barrique for 20 months, with 50% new oak and 50% second-use barrel. Production is 10,000 bottles.

The flagship wine of the estate and the vintage marking their 20th anniversary, the 2020 Guado De'Gemoli was made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised for 20 months in 50% new French oak. It pours a rich red color and is pure and inviting, with lifted layers of cherry liqueur, menthol, fresh leather, and olive. Graceful and elegant, it is full-bodied but not heavy and has fine tannins, even balance, and a nice chocolaty texture through its long finish. As with the Felciano, this will benefit from aging to harmonize and come into completeness, but it’s also quite attractive now, with a giving structure that would make it a great option for restaurants. Drink 2024-2040.
