The 2018 Saint-Aubin En Montceau 1er Cru has a classy, beautifully-defined bouquet. Minerally malic scents, petrichor and light orange blossom emerge with time. The palate is well-balanced with a supple opening, good extract here, fine cohesion with just the right amount of salinity towards the finish. The persistence here is very impressive and this comes recommended. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

The 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Montceau is also performing well from bottle, mingling aromas of pear, pomelo, orange oil, fresh bread and ginger. Medium to full-bodied, racy and tensile, with fine depth at the core but a more open, giving profile than the 2017 vintage, this will offer a broad drinking window.
The 2018 Saint-Aubin en Montceau 1er Cru has a more northerly exposure with less limestone but more marn soils, which tend to ripen later than the other cuvées. This feels much more primal and lacks the harmony of Colin’s other cuvées; perhaps it is going through an awkward stage in its barrel maturation. The palate is a little reduced at the moment but demonstrates fine weight and a slightly waxy texture, almost as if there was a splash of Aligoté on the finish. Not bad at all, but it’s difficult to see how it will develop once in bottle.
