At first with a touch of gunflint reduction, the smokiness gradually lifts to reveal a tight and lean expression of Trebbiano d’Abruzzese – all citrus and mineral, needing time and air to reveal itself fully.

The 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Fonte Canale is as gorgeous as ever. It lifts up with a minty freshness that gives way to sliced green apples, ginger and enriching almond paste notes. Texturally deep, it floods that palate with ripe orchard fruits offset by a stern saline tinge, coming across as elegant yet also salty, nearly sultry in character. It leaves the senses drenched in primary concentration and sour citrus, saline and intense, yet still watering for more. The 2020 is a bombshell beauty in this Fonte Canale lineup and will surely make readers very happy over the next decade or more.

The magic of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is apparent in the 2020 Fonte Canale. It entices the senses with a bouquet that mixes rich raw almond and mineral tones with refreshing crushed apple and mint hints to balance. This is elegant, soft and enveloping, with ripe orchard fruits complicated by zesty lemony citrus as a salty staining of minerals cakes the palate with youthful concentration. The perfumed finale shows the prestige of these old vines, tapering off potent and tense with a lasting concentration and liquid stone sensation that keeps me looking back to the glass for more.
