Tasted blind. Bright crimson. Savoury and rich at the same time with real energy! Smooth. Not much tannin but the fruit matches the acidity. Quite a racy Pomerol, though it’s a bit short and not for the long term. (JR)

The 2021 La Gravette De Certan is all Merlot, as all of the Cabernet Franc went into the Grand Vin. From healthy yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare and brought up in 50% new French oak, it has a vivid ruby hue to go with classic Pomerol notes of ripe black cherries, kirsch, spring flowers, and hints of damp earth. It's medium-bodied, has a pure, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. Drink this charming, fruit-forward, wonderfully textured second wine over the coming decade.
The 2021 La Gravette de Certan is 100% Merlot this year, sourced from younger vines (under 25 years) and matured in 50% new oak. It has a very well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, gravel and touches of pine. The palate is medium-bodied, soft and sensual, with pliant tannins, touches of espresso and mocha and an open-knit finish. Fine.
About the producer
The original Château at Vieux Château Certan dates back to around 1770 but the modern history of the estate begins in 1924 - the year that Belgian wine merchant Georges Thienpont purchased the property.
