Champy's 2021 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Altitude 377 Clous has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, spices and orange zest. Deeper and richer than the Bignon, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, concluding with a peony-inflected finish.

Tank sample. Very slightly darker than the En Bignon 421. Smells much riper too, with sweeter cherry fruit, both fresh and dried, and lightly spiced. Very different. On the palate too, this is very different: tannins are more firmly structured and there’s more depth, but it also seems a little more chewy/leathery. I prefer the style and the finesse of the En Bignon. This is deeper, riper and longer but also a bit leathery on the finish. (JH)
