Score 89/100 · Drink 2022-2028, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

(entirely destemmed; made from the younger vines in the clos , which are now 20 years old; 35 hectoliters per hectare produced): Healthy dark red. Ripe, fresh scents of kirsch and licorice. At once laid-back and penetrating, offering good spicy intensity to its flavors of dark cherry, licorice, minerals and violet. Offers lovely inner-mouth lift and thickness of texture, then turns a bit clenched and tannic on the back end without going hard. This wine is carrying 14% alcohol without chaptalization but only moderate acidity.

(made from the young vines in this vineyard; destemmed): Bright dark red. Good spicy lift to the aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, pepper and wild herbs. Juicy, supple black fruit and spice flavors saturate the palate, with a pungent mineral quality providing lift. Tactile for young vines but ultimately a wine of only moderate depth. Finishes with initially round, silky tannins that turn a bit dry with air. This will probably be best for relatively early drinking. (Incidentally, there is no Volnay Champans in 2015 as the estate had to tear out the vines for replanting after the harvest of 2014.)

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots includes the young vines (20 years old) from the Clos des Santenots. It has a rounded, quite opulent, ravishing bouquet with scents of cassis, iodine and raspberry. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin, succulent and with good density, although its exuberance needs to be tempered a little on the finish that shows just a little alcohol at the moment. Give it 2-3 years in bottle at least.
