The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Serpentières has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with notes of smoky cherries, raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and layered, it's lively and textural, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins, and a perfumed finish.

40% whole bunch. Tank sample. Deepish cherry red. Richer and darker on the nose, a little riper in fruit character than Les Jarrons. Dry, paper-fine tannins and sinewy on the palate. Not as rich on the palate as I expected from the nose but this has elegance and restraint and a juicy pure core. Herbal stemmy notes are just right. (JH)
