Deep crimson. Smoky dark fruits. Oaky but not overly so. Dark and spicy. Very savoury on the palate, firm and dry. Not in the least charming but has a 'masculine' savoury dark appeal. The oak flattens the fruit a bit, for the moment at least. (JH)

The 2018 Volnay Vieilles Vignes comes from vines just below Les Carelles on red soils in a warm microclimate. It has an attractive bouquet of red cherries, raspberry and orange blossom aromas, plus a touch of undergrowth that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied opening. This is a very sweet Volnay with kirsch and touches of fig toward the spicy, black-pepper-tinged finish. Enjoyable, if not the most intellectual of all the Volnays I tasted on my visits.
