Blended with 5% Viognier and coming from a mix of lieux-dits spread throughout the appellation, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Giroflarie has a beautiful perfume of red, blue, and black fruits as well as pepper, violets, spring flowers, and a kiss of bacon fat. Rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and just about flawless balance, this elegant, seamless, lengthy Côte Rôtie will drink beautifully for two decades. Give it a few years if you can. Drink 2029-2045. Located in Ampuis, Domaine Jasmin remains one of the classic, traditional estates of Côte Rôtie. Now run by Patrick Jasmin, the domaine is best known for its elegant, seamless, and absolutely classic style, always emphasizing finesse over power. Farming is sustainable, and the wines are typically made with partial whole cluster fermentation and moderate oak influence. Production is small, and while the wines are not always submitted for annual tastings, I always love being able to visit this tiny cellar in the heart of Ampuis. The Côte Rôtie La Giroflarie comes from a mix of lieux-dits across the appellation and is blended with a touch of Viognier, while the new cuvée Olia represents a selection of the best barrels. The 2022s and 2023s are superb, showing the purity, balance, and classical elegance that define this historic domaine. Their Syrah La Chevalière is also well worth your time and money.

A real success at this address, reflecting the stylistic refinement seen in recent vintages, the 2022 Cote Rotie la Giroflarie exudes a complex, fresh bouquet of pepper, dark berries, spices, licorice, pencil lead and floral notes. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, it has a delicate, pure core of fruit, with a tense, linear mid-palate of fine-grained tannins and bright acids that carry through the long, ethereal and saline finish. Crafted from a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier—all destemmed—that was sourced from vines spread across 14 plots in 14 lieux-dits, this terrific contribution to the vintage was matured for 24 months in a combination of barrels (30% new) and wooden tanks. It is a stunning wine in the making that captures the essence of Côte Rôtie.
