The 2021 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru is another example of a reduced white burgundy, although it is not as heavy as Bachelet's Champlots. It does, however, miss a bit of complexity and personality. The palate is quite sharp on the entry with pointed citric acidity that does not quite gel with the rest of the wine, and there is some attenuation towards the finish. This is a good wine upended by the SO2. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cropped at just 12hL/ha, the 2022 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru was heavily impacted by the frost due to the hard limestone soil. It has a pure, intense, beautifully defined bouquet with hints of orange blossom and citrus peel. The palate is medium-bodied with a strong citric core. There is sharp acidity here, yet lip-smacking salinity and quite a persistent finish. Excellent.

The 2021 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière unwinds in the glass with aromas of peach and pear mingled with iodine, wheat toast and gunflint and framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, layered and chalky, with a deep core of fruit and tangy acids that carry through the finish, it will reward bottle age.
