Exhibiting aromas of cherries, warm spices, cassis and coniferous forest floor, the 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, with chalky structure and lively balancing acids. Out of the gates, this is a touch introverted, and it will reward at least a few years' patience.

The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre offers slightly more complexity than the Combottes, with candle wax and light frangipane notes unfurling from the glass. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, providing orange peel and tangerine notes and good weight and density on the midpalate, even if it does not quite kick on in the final third. It may have more to offer once in bottle.

Fermented in barrel, then 15–18 months on the fine lees before bottling. Smoky on the nose. Oodles of ripe peach and sweet citrus peel. The citrus note continues on the palate and adds restraint and freshness alongside riper, bolder stone-fruit notes. A good line of acidity here, adding some savoury to the sweet toast. Textural finish. (TP)
