The 2021 L'Aurage has an attractive bouquet with black plum, black olive and a light touch of algae. There’s fine delineation, if just short of intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, revealing red plum and baking spice, a touch of clove and white pepper. This is kind of a gentle L’Aurage—it sashays along nicely without creating too much fuss.
The 2021 Domaine de l’Aurage, 100% Merlot, is soft, open-knit and fruity. Hints of kirsch, cinnamon, orange peel, mint all grace this exotic Côtes-de-Castillon. The 2021 is a quirky wine, but it is long on character. A kiss of sweet French oak is a reminder this is a smaller-scaled year, yet all the elements are very much in balance. There is a bit of edginess in the tannin, but the wine starts to soften with aeration.
98% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample . Less obviously seductive but rich and sweet with chalky, dry tannins. Plenty of matière . Follows the house style. (JL)
