The 2020 Chinon Clos du Chêne Vert is derived from vines planted in 1994 and 1999 at the limit of the Chinon appellation on clay, limestone soils. Revealing a solar, deep bouquet of cocoa, spices and dark wild berries, it’s medium to full-bodied, dense and round with an enveloping mid-palate, fine-grained tannins and polished texture that segues into a long, mineral finish. After six months in barrels, it matured for several months in stainless tanks, followed by six to eight months in bottles. It is one of the most complete and complex in Charles Joguet’s range.

The 2020 Clos du Chêne Vert may seem rather muted tasted alongside the more aromatic, filigree 2019, but don't be put off by such vintage variation. It offers pure black cherry and rich raspberry flavors meeting spice and vanillin. Firm, focused and dense, it always manages to capture an elegance despite its abundance of fine, mouth-coating, chalky tannins. If you have a massive hunk of red meat, decant this and drink, but you'd be better waiting for another five years.
Clos du Chêne Vert Monopole is one of the top vineyards from Joguet facing south west toward the river Vienne, to the east of the town of Chinon. This is densely concentrated with almost juicy fruit, yet it remains compact in style – all cola, florals, liquorice, black cherry and tea leaf. It has a firmness of tannin and a sense of real sinew and compactness. Long and scented, this is far too young and is in barrel, but it's got plenty of promise for greatness.
