Tasting notes
A deep purple in the glass with a crimson edge, pronounced aromas of violets, dried black fruit and menthol rise from the glass. On the palate, there are clear flavours of dried blackberries, bramble and game cooled by a menthol overtone and brightened by unmistakeably alpine acidity. The chalky tannins are fine and well-integrated, making for a deceptively elegant grip to the palate. Graphite and salt surround the fruit on the mid-palate, filling the long finish which is pure gravel, mouthwatering salinity and more of that herbal lift. Accessible now with sufficient time to breathe, even better after a year or two in bottle, enjoy this over the next eight to 10 years.

The vineyard site for the 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita is separated into a handful of parcels with stones close to the surface and a distinct calcareous influence. Fermented 80-100% whole cluster in concrete, and aged again in concrete, it offers upfront concentrated fruit and a fleshy, generous palate of gravel, blood, and iron, evoking the Northern Rhône’s feral nature from a different place and time. Age through 2040. A multi-generational winery and restaurant in the Valle de Uco under the guidance of winemaker Sebastian Zuccardi, these are mountain wines with a sense of place, expressive of the terroir of specific vineyards, parcels, soils, and altitude. In 2016, the winery was built after dividing vineyards by soil type, and it’s made entirely of concrete inside and out, with concrete vessels also used for fermentation and aging. Its highest-level wines are the Parcel Wines, made to show the uniqueness of a particular parcel of land within an estate vineyard.
Manual harvest with bunch selection. Filling of vessels by gravity. Fermentation in concrete tanks with ambient yeasts. All of the wine was aged in concrete vessels. Perhaps the most extreme of the Finca expressions, and coming from some of the most extreme soils with boulders that can weigh up to 20 tons buried beneath the vines. There is a sanguine minerality and gunflint note to this wine which is tightly packed with an abundance of chalky tannins that leave a powdery mouthfeel and purr with energy. Hints of lavender begin to emerge on the finale, hinting at what will come with more time in bottle. A wine to age. (AB)
The 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita hails from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley. A rich purple in the glass. The nose presents camphor, thyme, hops, blueberry and blackberry over a bed of sage. Dry, compact and juicy, the chalky, vibrant palate is stirred up by measured acidity, ensuring a taut, balanced mouthfeel. With a lithe, energetic character, this Malbec exemplifies Zuccardi's primary, spare style.
