Opaque ruby. Suave, deeply pitched black and blue fruit liqueur, vanilla bean and floral pastille scents are enlivened by Asian spices and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with concentrated, oak-spiced blueberry and cassis flavors, with an exotic hint of chewing tobacco coming up with air. This extremely young wine displays a suave interplay of richness and vivacity. Smooth tannins build slowly on a strikingly long, fruit-driven finish that leaves a sexy lavender note behind.

100% Shiraz. Single vineyard (Magill) on the edge of Adelaide’s eastern suburbs (just eight kilometres from the city’s CBD), fruit is crushed, fermented and matured on-site at the original Penfolds Magill winery, established in 1844. First produced in 1983. 14 months in 76% French oak (71% new) and 24% new American oak hogsheads. TA 7.3 g/l, pH 3.6. Very intense nose. Very slightly funky on the nose. Then sweet and heady and much more open and more relaxed than the St Henri. Intense and extremely youthful. Dry end. (JR)

Coming from the small, single vineyard surrounding the original Magill winery, the deep garnet-purple colored 2013 Shiraz Magill Estate reveals gorgeous black plums and blackberry tart aromas with spice box, vanilla, lavender and cola suggestions plus some cigar box hints. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, rich and expressive, it has a rock solid backbone of fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing with great length and harmony. Best Magill Estate ever? It is certainly the finest I’ve tasted. Only 1200 cases produced.
