Good full red. Enticing aromas of redcurrant, plum, mocha, spices and menthol. Supple on entry, then rather tightly wound for 2007, conveying a saline, rather clenched character. Finishes with substantial tannic clout and a faint dryness. This may be in a dumb stage today, but I can't help but wonder where it can go with bottle aging.

Bricky ruby. Fragrant, floral, tea leaf. Refined red fruit, elegant structure, cool and fresh but with depth and great persistence. (JH)

Saving the very best for last, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is a gorgeous expression, with towering varietal characteristics that casts a long shadow. There’s so much going on in the glass: Prune, blackberry, cassis, dried herbs and licorice are beautifully woven together. The wine is firm and crisp in the mouth with perfectly integrated tannins. You can drink this wine in a few years, or decide to keep it for later. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. The Scavino family (Enrico and his daughters Enrica and Elisa) carry forth an important family legacy with a wide range of cru-specific wines that brilliantly exhibit individual styles – despite all being made by the same hands. La Morra. Deep, impenetrable ruby with orange tinges. Gorgeous ripe fruit laced with oak notes. Elegant weight and with near-perfect balance. Modernist and totally convincing. (WS)
