The 2017 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is a new wine in the range. Tightly wound and laced with mineral tones, the Mitans has a core of energy that really differentiates it in the lineup. Dark red fruit, lavender, rose petal, wild flowers, mint and spice emerge in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A Burgundy of understatement and power, the 2017 needs time to fully come together, but it is quite promising. The 33% new oak is well-judged.

There are three barrels of the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans, one of which is new. Offering up aromas of dark berries, spices, wood smoke and a touch of new oak, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a plush attack and a succulent mid-palate, though some firm structuring tannins assert themselves on the finish; if those resolve, my score will look conservative.
