FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

Liquorice and vanilla combine with black cherry to make an intoxicating nose. Round, voluptuous and luscious, it’s persistent with velveteen tannins that give texture to the palate. Waves of acidity refresh the palate, countering the intensity of dark fruit. A moody, brooding Grand Cru.

Derived from their own vines (complemented by some purchased grapes), Drouhin's 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru opens in the glass with notes of sweet red berries, cherries and plums mingled with orange zest, exotic spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it's broad-shouldered and powerful, with a rich core of fruit, sweet tannins and an expansive finish.

From the usual sources, their own and a regular contributor, vinified in barrel with minimal extraction. Now that they can pick the other part when they want, you no longer see two different wines in one. It certainly shows very gracefully on the nose. Much more harmonious, a little touch of liquorice along with ripe strawberry, a pleasing tingle to liven up the finish., very graceful, very persistent.

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, which tends to be picked a little later than other cuvées, takes a while to open in the glass, with mainly black fruit and hints of black olive, a subtle marine influence coming through with time. The palate is mediumbodied with fine-grain tannins, merging with more red fruit on the mid-palate, finishing with a touch of sour cherry. Very fine.
